Pollution Prevention Tips

Rainfall is inevitable in Tampa, so we can all do our part to prevent pollution and to keep storm drains clear. By following these recommendations, the potential for stormwater pollution and flooding can be significantly minimized.

Residential

  • Don't blow soil, grass or leaves into the street or storm drain.
  • Use fertilizers and lawn chemicals sparingly.  Sweep up any material that ends up on impervious surfaces.
  • Clean up pet waste and flush it down the toilet or put it in the garbage.
  • Have septic tanks pumped and inspected every 3-5 years so they don't leak.
  • Keep your car working properly so motor oil and fluids don't leak
  • Take unwanted hazardous household chemicals to a drop off location for proper disposal or recycling.
  • Report illicit discharges to (813) 274-3101.

Commercial and Business

  • Don't blow soil, grass or leaves into the street or storm drain.
  • Maintain your fleet so motor oil and fluids don't leak.
  • Contain refuse and dispose of properly.
  • Properly store oil and grease at commercial restaurants.
