Tampa, FL—On Sunday, Tampa’s infamous pirate ship sailed away from the Tampa Convention Center, but not without bringing smiles to children’s faces yet again.

A heartwarming event took place on the Tampa Riverwalk over the weekend that allowed kids affected by cancer to become pirates for a day aboard the infamous ship.

The Pirate Beard Shaving for Pediatric Cancer Fundraiser took place on Sunday when four pirates from the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla parted ways with their beards for a cause—to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. As of Sunday night, they raised $7,600 with donations still rolling in to-date.

After the beard shaving, children wishing to be pirates for the day were invited aboard the Jose Gasparilla with their families and 25 Ye Mystic Krewe members for the outgoing voyage. This jovial event falls in line with the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla’s dedication to community outreach.

The Jose Gasparilla ship has officially left the Tampa Convention Center for the season but will return to American Social for the official outbound voyage ceremony on March 3rd.
