It’s safe to say that this year’s HCPS SLAM was a slam dunk!
This week, the annual Hillsborough County Public School SLAM event allowed students of all grade levels to meet some of their favorite authors, ask questions, and get autographs. The event, which celebrates student literacy and media (SLAM), featured panels with successful authors and illustrators, including:
- Sharon Robinson, author of The Hero Two Doors Down
- Henry Cole, illustrator of Ferocious Fluffity
- Christina Diaz Gonzalez, author of Moving Target
- James Ponti, author of FRAMED! A T.O.A.S.T. Mystery
- Sarvenaz Tash, author of The Geek’s Guide to Unrequited Love
During the panels, students received advice from their favorite authors and had an opportunity to ask questions. In the Young Adult (YA) panel, author Christina Diaz Gonzalez encouraged students to start writing even if they feel discouraged stating,
“You can always revise a poorly written page, but you can never revise a blank one.”
Amongst the featured authors, was Sharon Robinson, daughter of famed baseball legend, Jackie Robinson. Sharon, who was there to discuss her children’s book The Hero Two Doors Down, spoke about her experience as an author and how her upbringing inspired her to become a writer.
In addition to books, student artwork, film, and other projects were also showcased during the event.
