Flood Mitigation and Insurance

Sandbagging

Anywhere it rains, it can flood.  Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, doesn't mean you won't in the future. Flood risk isn't just based on history, it's also based on a number of factors: rainfall, river-flow and tidal-surge data, topography, flood-control measures, and changes due to building and development.  To check your flood risk, look up your address in the  FEMA Flood Map Service Center.

You can take an active role in protecting your property from flood damage. The method you choose depends on your particular situation. Sandbagging alone is not an effective method for protecting a structure from flooding.
In addition to protection, think about insuring your property through the NFIP.  Visit www.floodsmart.gov for more information on flood insurance.
