The City of Tampa is proud to announce the hiring of Maribel Garrett as its new Community Engagement Coordinator and Hispanic Liaison. The addition of this position to the newly formed Community Engagement & Partnerships Department further affirms Mayor Jane Castor’s commitment to uplifting all neighborhoods.
Garrett will work alongside other departments to help bring City Hall to Tampa’s growing Hispanic community and ensure Spanish speakers are informed and engaged.
“As a proud Hispanic and an educator, I have always enjoyed looking for ways to help others,” Garrett said. “When I heard about this position, all I could think of was having the opportunity to help the community and become a voice for those who need someone speak for them.”
“This is a key hire for my administration as we progressively work to connect our community to City Hall,” said Mayor Jane Castor. “Maribel plays a significant role in ensuring the voice of our growing Spanish-speaking population is heard in the critical matters our city faces, while exploring new ways for us to celebrate the diverse Hispanic heritage that runs deep throughout our neighborhoods.”
Janelle McGregor, who serves as the Director of Community Engagement for the Neighborhood & Community Affairs Department, said Garrett will serve a critical role in keeping neighborhoods informed in both English and Spanish.
“Maribel brings a wealth of knowledge and energy to our team along with the passion it takes to foster positive relationships between government and the individuals we serve,” McGregor said. “Her new role is just one of the ways the City of Tampa is working to enhance its accessibility and overcome language barriers.”
Garrett was born and raised in Puerto Rico, getting her degree at the University of Puerto Rico. When she decided to work on her master's degree, she moved to Tampa to attend the University of South Florida.
“That was one of the hardest decisions I had made up until then,” Garrett said. “We are a very close family so leaving it all behind was difficult. However, the opportunity also made me grow tremendously.”
Once here, she became involved with different Hispanic Organizations within and outside of USF as that giving her the opportunity to stay connected with my culture and my traditions. She then met her husband, who she’s been married to for 26 years and has three daughters.
Garrett has also been extremely involved with Community organizations like the Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Council and Tampa Hispanic Heritage, Inc both of which focus on raising scholarship funds for Hispanic Students attending USF, HCC and the University of Tampa.
“As President of Tampa Hispanic Heritage for the last year, and what a year it has been, I’ve been extremely proud of how our members came together to bring our events back during what is still a very challenging time due to the pandemic,” she said.
Moving forward in her new role, Garrett said she wants to be accessible to those who need help.
“I want to develop partnerships with our businesses to help meet the needs of our neighborhoods and our community,” she said. “I want to be the voice of our residents in City Hall.”

La Ciudad de Tampa orgullosamente anuncia la contratación de Maribel Garrett como Coordinadora de Asuntos de la Comunidad yEnlace hispano. Esta posición, que forma parte del departamento de Asuntos de la Comunidad y Alianzas Comunitarias, reafirmael compromiso de la alcaldesa Jane Castor de mejorar y elevar atodas nuestras comunidades.
“Como hispana, siempre he disfrutado el ayudar a otroshispanos” dijo Garrett. “Cuando me entere de este puesto, me emocioné al pensar que sería una oportunidad de ayudar y serla voz de aquellos que lo necesitan.”
“La selección a esta posición es clave para mi administración, mientras continuamos trabajando arduamente en conectar a nuestra comunidad con la casa alcaldía," dijo la alcaldesa Jane Castor.
"Maribel juega un papel significativo en asegurarse que la voz de nuestra creciente comunidad hispano hablante sea escuchada en asuntos críticos en nuestra ciudad mientras exploramos nuevas formas de celebrar la diversidad de la herencia hispana que esta cimentada en nuestros vecindarios.”
Janelle McGregor, quien sirve como Directora de Asuntos de la Comunidad en el departamento de Vecindarios y Asuntos de la Comunidad, compartió que Garrett realizará un papel crítico en mantener a nuestra comunidad informada, tanto en inglés, como en español.
“Maribel trae el conocimiento y la energía, que, combinada con su pasión, nos ayudará a seguir fortaleciendo los lazos entre el gobierno y los individuos a los que servimos,” dijo McGregor. “La creación de esta posición es solo una de las muchas formas en las que la Ciudad de Tampa esta trabajando por mejorar el acceso a la información y sobrellevar las barreras del idioma.”
Garrett es de Puerto Rico donde también se graduó de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Cuando decidió continuar sus estudios de maestría, se mudó a la ciudad de Tampa para asistir a la Universidad del Sur de la Florida (USF).
“Esa fue una de las decisiones más difíciles que había tomado hasta ese momento,” dijo Garrett. “Mi familia es muy unida, así que tomar la decisión de dejarlo todo atrás fue muy difícil. Sin embargo, me ayudó a crecer como ser humano.”
Ya establecida, comenzó a involucrarse con organizaciones hispanas, las cuales le dieron la oportunidad de mantenerse conectada con sus tradiciones y cultura. Ahí conoció a su esposo con el cual lleva casada 26 años y tiene tres hijas.
Garrett continúa involucrada con organizaciones comunitarias como el Consejo Hispano de la Alcaldía de Tampa y Tampa Hispanic Heritage, Inc., los cuales enfocan sus esfuerzos en recaudar fondos para becas para estudiantes hispanos en USF, HCC y la Universidad de Tampa.
“Como presidenta de Tampa Hispanic Heritage este año, estoy muy orgullosa de como nuestros miembros unieron sus fuerzas para hacer nuestros eventos realidad en lo que ha sido un año lleno de muchos retos debido a la pandemia,” se expresó.
En su nuevo rol, Garrett dijo que quiere asegurarse de ser accesible a aquellos que lo necesitan.
“Quiero desarrollar alianzas con los negocios en nuestra comunidad para así servir a sus miembros y la comunidad en general,” dijo. “Quiero ser la voz de nuestros residentes en la Casa de la Alcaldía.”
