STEM Campers Showcase Robotic Trash bin at Solid Waste STEM Workshop

City of Tampa Solid Waste Department will host a workshop with a local Summer science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) Camp, Quest STEM. The camp is a program through Gentleman's Quest of Tampa Inc.

The mentorship program helps minority Tampa Bay teenage boys by putting them on the right track to success after graduating high school.

STEM Quest campers will attend the one-day workshop at the Tampa Solid Waste Department at 4010 W. Spruce Street on Thursday, July 28, at 12:30 p.m.

Campers will present two prototypes, a robotic trash can and a recycling assisting device. Both were developed and created in six short weeks by the campers. Solid Waste Director Larry Washington tasked the group with creating a solution to combat the issue of incorrect recycling in the city limits.

Quest STEM campers will also learn about the solid waste industry, explore the impact of STEM on the industry and get an up-close view of how solid waste vehicles operate.

Since 2014, Gentleman's Quest has helped hundreds of young minority men realize their full potential as students, make positive choices, and equip them with the skills necessary to become productive citizens.

STEM Quest is a cross-curricular program that allows teen boys to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program provides a creative space that teaches hard skills for future STEM careers in a fun and engaging setting.
