The City of Tampa is proud to announce its participation in AmeriCorps Week from March 12-18, 2023. During this week, we recognize the commitment of millions of Americans who have chosen to serve their country through AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors and encourage others to follow in their footsteps of service.
As part of the celebrations, the City of Tampa will highlight two incredible projects funded by AmeriCorps: Castor’s Classroom Companions and Tampa’s Green Team. These projects have a positive impact on the community and showcase the importance of service in cities, big and small.
Castor’s Classroom Companions is a partnership between the City of Tampa and Seniors in Service that helps place seniors, who serve as tutors and mentors to vulnerable students, inside classrooms at Booker T. Washington, Broward, and Potter Elementary Schools. Thanks to a $100,000 grant from AmeriCorps, the City of Tampa was able to expand its initial program.
Tampa’s Green Team, the first city-sponsored environmental stewardship program in the State of Florida, is now working hard in partnership with Volunteer Florida and AmeriCorps. The 20 members of Tampa’s Green Team are now cleaning parks, planting trees, and promoting climate education programs alongside City of Tampa staff and associated non-profits. The goal is to make the community a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable place to work, live, and play.
To mark AmeriCorps Week, Mayor Jane Castor is also issuing a proclamation to highlight the positive impact of these local programs and the importance of service in building stronger communities.
“We are proud to celebrate AmeriCorps Week and to highlight the meaningful impact of these two programs in our community,” Mayor Jane Castor said. “The work being done by the Classroom Companions and Tampa’s Green Team is a testament to the power of service and the difference that it can make in the lives of our residents. We thank AmeriCorps for their support and partnership in making these initiatives possible.”
AmeriCorps is dedicating Tuesday, March 14 as “Mayor’s Day” where they will celebrate how cities like Tampa are leading innovative AmeriCorps programs and will share stories of the impact of service in cities, big and small, through their channels.
