The two drivers involved in Sunday night's traffic fatality that took the lives of two victims are now in custody.

On Sunday, May 28, 2023, at 10:42 p.m., 18-year-old Savion Griggs and 17-year-old Zi'yon Walter were traveling northbound on S. 20th Street. Griggs was operating a black 2012 Kia Optima that was traveling in the middle lane and Walter was operating a gray 2016 Hyundai Sonata that was traveling in the inside lane. Walter was changing lanes when he struck Griggs's left rear fender causing the Kia to veer off the east side of the roadway and striking a chain link fence. The victims, a 17-year-old male and an 18-year-old male who were passengers in the Kia, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Excessive speed was a factor in the crash.

Griggs and Walter were taken into custody and are each facing two charges of vehicular homicide. Walter faces an additional charge of Driving Without a Valid Driver's License (Death or Serious Bodily Injury).

"Our condolences go out to the families of the victims. It's unfortunate that two young lives were lost so tragically," said Interim Chief Lee Bercaw. "Street racing is not victimless, and it has serious consequences. There is no amount of street credibility that is worth putting your life or the lives of others at risk."
