On 06/13/2023 at 8:48 pm, Tampa Police responded to the report of an assault in the 1500 block of N. Nebraska Ave. Officers arrived to find an adult black male in his mid-thirties with upper body trauma. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Detectives immediately began following up on investigative leads. The investigation showed that the suspect and victim were engaged in a dispute that escalated when the suspect stabbed the victim and fled the scene in a black SUV.
Detectives were able to quickly identify the vehicle driven by the suspect. Through evidence and several witness statements detectives were able to positively identify the suspect as 34-year-old Matthew Edwards.
On 06/14/2023 at approximately 12:30 am, Tampa Police located the suspect vehicle at 3016 N Central Ave. Edwards was arrested at this location without further incident. He was transported to the Orient Road Jail, charged with murder.
