Tampa Police have made an additional arrest in relation to the shooting that took place in the game room of the West River Boulevard apartment complex on June 15. On Monday afternoon, 18-year-old Jason Newson (7/8/2004) was apprehended at 464 Flamingo Dr in Apollo Beach.

On June 15, Newson was with seven (7) other teens in the game room of the West River Boulevard apartment complex when he pulled an AR-style rifle from inside his pants. As another group of subjects began to enter the game room, Newson positioned himself in the corner directly diagonal from the door and pointed the gun toward the doorway. A black male subject is seen entering the game room and multiple subjects are behind him. As the intended victim entered the room, Newson fired a single round. A single muzzle flash is seen coming from the gun at which point 15-year-old Deondre Smith, who was arrested on June 17, also fired his gun at the entering group.

Detectives, following up on evidence and witness statements, were able to positively identify Newson for his role in this shooting. On June 26, detectives located Newson at 464 Flamingo Drive and took him into custody without incident.

“I am thankful that no one was critically injured in this shooting,” said Chief Bercaw. “Our detectives are committed to holding all those involved accountable for their actions. I hope that the arrest of these teens sends a strong message to all the young people in our community that there are serious consequences to engaging in violent, criminal behavior.”

“I commend the Tampa Police Department for their relentless pursuit of justice in this case. It is because of their unwavering dedication to public safety that these acts of violence will not go unanswered. Our community is a safer place because of their tireless efforts and commitment,” said State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

Newson has been charged with Attempted Murder, Carrying Concealed Firearm, Shooting Within a Building, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He will be transported to Orient Road Jail.

This remains an active investigation.
