The City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department will begin renovations to the Kid Mason Community Center with a groundbreaking ceremony this Wednesday, August 16.
The renovations will add an additional 411 square feet to the center. Improvements include a computer lab, fenced in play area, new restrooms, an upgraded kitchen, completely upgraded water, sewer and electrical utilities, and a new enclosed entrance with a safety check-in point for guests. The fenced play area at the center will include an open area for outdoor games and a climbing wall.
This center is named after Mason “Kid” Fendall who was a well-known community activist and proud black business owner. He helped establish the Hillsborough County Industrial Home and raised money for a playground for the children of the Central Avenue area. The Kid Mason Community Center is also a stop on the Tampa Soulwalk, which honors black history throughout our city.
“It is so important that we maintain our Parks & Recreation facilities, especially those with such rich history,” said Mayor Jane Castor. “These renovations are just one example of what’s possible when we invest in our community."
Mayor Jane Castor presented "Tampa Thrives," the proposed FY2024 budget to Tampa City Council earlier this month. One of several focuses within the budget is additional funding for parks to improve access to services and overall quality of life for residents across the city.
The design and construction for the Kid Mason Community Center are being funded by the Downtown Core CRA and is estimated to be complete by the late summer of 2024.
Media outlets interested in covering the ground breaking ceremony are asked to RSVP by emailing media@tampagov.net.
