Yard Waste Gets Second Life Through Compost Giveaway

Following the recent launch of its new yard waste initiative, Tampa’s Department of Solid Waste & Environmental Program Management, in partnership with Veransa Group, will host a free compost giveaway.

On Saturday, June 8, 2024, from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M., residents will have the opportunity to take home up to 30 gallons of compost. Earlier this year, the City of Tampa partnered with Veransa Group to give yard waste a second life. Through this program, an estimated 38 million pounds of yard waste will be composted each year, resulting in reduced GHG emissions and space savings in both the City of Tampa's McKay Bay Waste-to-Energy Plant and local landfills. Since the start of the program, approximately 3,950 tons of yard waste have been composted.

"In alignment with our Climate Action and Equity Plan, composting our yard waste is a big step toward creating a more sustainable Tampa," said Mayor Jane Castor. "But residents and businesses will play a big role in making sure they remember to dispose of yard waste appropriately in order for the program to be successful."

For the continued success of the program, residents are reminded to dispose yard waste in paper bags. Plastic bags are not allowed.

The event is for residents in the City of Tampa Solid Waste jurisdiction only. Registration is required. For more information and to register, visit Composting - City of Tampa.
