The Tampa Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred on October 10, 2024.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., officers responded to a traffic crash at the intersection of Florida Ave. and Palm Ave. Due to widespread power outages caused by Hurricane Milton, the area was dark, and the traffic signal was inoperative.
A 2005 Nissan Sentra, driven by a 58-year-old male, collided with a 2022 Hyundai Tucson, occupied by a 35-year-old male driver and a 55-year-old female passenger. The impact occurred on the passenger side of the Hyundai.
Unfortunately, the 55-year-old female passenger in the Hyundai was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai, thankfully, was not injured. The driver of the Nissan sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to survive.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life that occurred last night,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of traveling safely, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. All drivers are urged to be extra cautious, especially at intersections, and to treat non-functioning traffic signals as four-way stops. Let's work together to prevent such tragedies in the future."
