Suspect Wanted in Deadly Shooting Arrested

The suspect wanted in connection to a deadly shooting on December 17, 2024, at a residence in the 1700 block of West Saint Joseph Street was arrested in Hillsborough County last night.

Derrick Dempsey (DOB: 11/29/89) is now charged with First-Degree murder.

“This is a tragic loss that no family should have to endure,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “We are thankful this dangerous individual is no longer on the street and for the partnership with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office that led to a quick arrest in this case.”

Just before 5:45 am Tuesday, Tampa Police responded to the report of gunshots heard coming from a home on St. Joseph St. Officers quickly arrived to find an adult white female, in her mid-30s, with a gunshot wound and immediately began providing life-saving measures.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where she died from her injuries. 

Witnesses reported to police Dempsey was arguing with a woman known to him inside a pickup truck. The witnesses stated Dempsey got out of the truck, hit the victim, and retrieved a gun before they heard a gunshot.

With the assistance of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Dempsey was arrested without incident. The shotgun was also collected.

"This dangerous and calloused criminal showed no regard for human life, but thanks to the strong partnership between the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and the Tampa Police Department, we were able to bring this individual into custody," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "We are proud to provide the assistance and assets needed to support our partners in keeping our community safe."
