The Tampa Water Department Conservation Team recently visited a local Home Depot to install signs to inform the public about the availability of Tampa Bay Water-Wise rebates. Eligible households replacing older toilets may qualify for a $100 rebate for purchasing a water-efficient toilet.

Tampa Bay Water Wise is a regional water conservation program that offers rebates to residents and commercial property owners who take proactive steps to reduce water use and demand on the region’s water supply. By replacing old, inefficient toilets with the WaterSense label, the average family can reduce water used for toilets by 20 to 60 percent, saving nearly 13,000 gallons of water per year.

Toilets are by far the main source of water use in the home, accounting for nearly 30 percent of an average home's indoor water consumption. Older, inefficient toilets use as much as 6 gallons per flush compared to modern toilets with WaterSense labels that may use as little as 1.28 gallons per flush or less while still providing equal or superior performance. This is 20 percent less water than the current federal standard of 1.6 gallons per flush.

“The Water Department has long supported initiatives that strengthen the resiliency and sustainability of our community,” said Chuck Weber, Director of the Tampa Water Department. “By incorporating the Tampa Bay Water Wise program into our existing water conservation program, we are able to offer our customers new ways to save money by lowering the amount of water they use.”
