One of Tampa's most iconic sights has been temporarily removed from the city's skyline.
The Tampa Convention Center sign, which has overlooked the Hillsborough River since 2012, has been removed and stored, as construction crews advance on the building's $38 million expansion and renovation project.
All 21 letters, approximately 6' in height, and weighing about 45 lbs. each, were removed on Thursday, December 9, 2021.
"While we will certainly miss seeing this monumental and symbolic sign, that has welcomed countless visitors and made Tampa residents proud, we are eager to see our beloved Tampa Convention Center undergo a massive facelift," said Mayor Jane Castor. "Upon the sign's return, the building will have undergone a major transformation, reflective of its incomparable beauty and potential."
The expansion project will create an additional 18 new meeting rooms, a waterfront terrace, Riverwalk improvements, and much more. It is expected to be completed by summer 2023.
In the meantime, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla has 'stolen' the letters and is expected to return them before the final product is unveiled. Video of their fierce encounter with Skanska crews is available below.
