On Friday, June 3, as part of National Gun Violence Awareness Day, Tampa Police Chief Mary O’Connor will take part in a Wear Orange Weekend event at Curtis Hixon Park, honoring the lives of those affected by gun violence and elevating gun violence prevention efforts in this community and across the nation.
Chief O’Connor will deliver a proclamation to the Florida Chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action on behalf of Mayor Jane Castor, deeming June 3 as National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Tampa.
The event begins at 6:00 p.m. at Curtis Hixon Park near the fountains. Chief O’Connor and State Attorney Andrew Warren will deliver remarks, followed by other community partners and advocates. Then, community members will embark on a Peace Walk down the Tampa Riverfront at 7:30 p.m. and watch as the city lights up in orange in honor of National Gun Violence Awareness day.
Here in Tampa, there have been 20 deadly gun shootings this year alone.
"People in Tampa and around the country are coming together today with a simple message: There's more we can do to end gun violence,” Chief O’Connor said. “We cannot accept this as a problem without solutions. There are things we can do, including risk protection orders, mental health counseling and intervention, and continued community engagement. Our common goal is a safer community for everyone.”
