In anticipation of more motorists and boaters in Tampa for the extended Labor Day weekend, the Tampa Police Department is launching an enforcement operation dubbed "The Heat is On."

Holiday celebrations combined with larger crowds often comes with an increased risk of individuals driving or operating a vessel under the influence.

Beginning Friday, September 2, through Monday, September 5, The TPD DUI Squad will have additional officers on patrol each night from 8 PM through 6 AM looking for drivers who are impaired, speeding or not wearing their seatbelts with a focus on Ybor City, Downtown, SOHO and areas surrounding city beaches, parks and recreational areas. The Mounted Unit and Bike Squad will also be highly visible to assist with crowd control in areas expected to draw large gatherings, such as restaurants and night clubs.

In addition to patrol officers, the Motor Unit will focus on aggressive driving and pedestrian safety throughout all three city districts.

The TPD Marine Unit will patrol the waterways of the City of Tampa throughout the three-day weekend, with an emphasis along the Courtney Campbell Causeway, Howard Frankland and Gandy Bridges.

Motorists and boaters are reminded to follow the below safety tips to ensure a safe Labor Day weekend:

Drivers:

- Don't drive impaired. Choose a designated driver or a ride sharing service before drinking.

- Follow the speed limit and be aware of pedestrians when driving near beaches, parks or other areas with heavy foot traffic.

- Put down the distractions. Texting while driving is illegal.

Boaters:

- Verify that all safety equipment is on board, including life vests, before taking to the water.

- Maintain a designated boat operator who will not be drinking.

- Be on the lookout for any safety concerns, such as hazards in the water or weather-related issues.
