SAFE PACKAGE DELIVERY
- Pick up packages at your local post office
- USPS, FedEx, UPS, and Amazon offer services to hold your package at their facility or locker locations, letting you decide when to pick up your delivery. USPS’s Package Intercept program will redirect a package that hasn’t been delivered yet to your local post office or to any other domestic address. Your package is safer sitting in a delivery facility, then outside your home unattended.
- Keep a security camera pointed at your porch
- Check your security camera regularly to make sure it is recording properly. If your package is stolen, security camera footage of the theft will help police catch the suspect.
- Use signature confirmation
- If you have something expensive on the way, ask your sender for signature confirmation. This ensures that the package will be delivered into your hands and not left out in the open.
- Leave delivery instructions
- Provide delivery instructions for your package; such as leaving the package with a neighbor or placing it someplace out of sight.
- Consider an alternate delivery destination
- When you order something online, consider sending the package to your workplace or to a family member, friend or neighbor who is home during the day and available to accept your delivery.
- Post a warning sign
- Signs for security systems can be a great deterrent for thieves. The threat of being monitored will often stop potential thieves who don’t want to be identified.
HOME SAFETY

- You should also make arrangements for someone to pick up your mail and newspapers so your house does not look empty.
- Always lock your car and home, even if you are away for only a few moments.
- Do not leave valuables in open view in your car.
- If you must leave valuable items in your car while out and about, place those items out of sight before reaching your destination.
- Leave lights turned on both inside and outside your residence after dark. Criminals don't like bright places.
- Criminals can guess what is in your home when they see the box for a new television next to your trash can or recycling bin! Hide those boxes and keep the bad guys guessing!
- Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied.
- If you have an alarm, be sure to set it. This would be a great time to make sure your alarm company has all of your updated emergency contact information so they can make the appropriate notifications should something happen while you are away.
- Be a good neighbor - if you see something suspicious, call police immediately. We are happy to check it out, and the service is free!
SHOPPING SAFETY
- Keep your car door locked. Unlocked vehicles allow burglars quick access.
- Shop with a companion as much as possible, especially during the evening hours.
- Stay alert to your surroundings when walking to and from your vehicle.
- Have your keys in your hand when walking to your vehicle.
- Park in well-lit parking lots. Also, avoid parking next to large plants or shrubbery that can be used to conceal criminals.
- Keep valuables out of sight, in both vehicles and homes.
- Only take the credit card, or number of checks you plan on using…travel light!
- Don’t advertise your purchases, dispose of boxes or containers carefully.
Report suspicious behavior by calling 9-1-1. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
