The City of Tampa Department of Solid Waste & Environmental Program Management will donate a rear loader refuse truck to the City of West Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic. West Santo Domingo is experiencing an economic and health crisis and needs the vehicle to provide basic services to its citizens. Recognizing the importance of a reliable, consistent solid waste collection from a health and safety perspective, Tampa’s Solid Waste Department proudly responded to the call for assistance. Councilman, Charlie Miranda originally learned of our Caribbean neighbor’s need and engaged Mayor Castor. Without hesitation, the Mayor and the Department initiated the donation process, which requires Tampa City Council approval.

The Department of Solid Waste has always maintained an effective vehicle replacement program to minimize extensive repair cost. In order to support this humanitarian effort, the Department will provide a 2008 rear-loading refuse collection vehicle. The City of West Santo Domingo will assume all transportation costs, tariffs, and other expenses.

“The City of Tampa Department of Solid Waste recognizes the hardships faced by the City of West Santo Domingo.  Tampa has a long-standing history of helping others in need and our department is proud to support our brothers and sisters in the Dominican Republic. Trash collection is a necessity, not a luxury, and the serious health consequences from non-collection are clear. Communities working together for the greater good will always be a guiding principle in Tampa” said Department Director, Mark Wilfalk.
