Following a nation-wide search for a Sustainability & Resilience Officer, the City of Tampa has hired Whitford Remer to fill this new position as part of Mayor Castor’s vision for Transforming Tampa’s Tomorrow.

Whitford Remer will be filling a new senior-level position to oversee the management of sustainability and resilience at the City of Tampa. Duties will include:
Implementing the City’s Sustainability and Resiliency Roadmap
Developing a Tampa Climate Action and Resilience Plan
Tackling Stormwater Management and Sea Level Rise
Transitioning the City to 100% Renewable Energy by 2045
Ensuring citywide environmental justice for all residents
Whit’s start date will be May 31st.
And coordinating other City efforts concerning sustainability and resiliency. The salary range is $89,094 to $131,788.
About Whitford Remer
Whit started his career in New Orleans, studying the environmental effects of Hurricane Katrina. His experience in disaster preparedness was later amplified when he worked closely on major environmental projects following the Deepwater Horizons oil spill.
Whit is also well-versed in environmental policy. From 2011-2014, he served as a policy analyst and attorney for the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) in Washington, D.C., helping shepherd through Congress the RESTORE Act – a major piece of environmental legislation designed to assist coastal communities recover from the 2010 oil spill. He has also served as Senior Manager of Federal Government Relations for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
In 2017, Whit was named Counsel and Director of Public Policy for the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), an insurance-backed research organization focused on building safety and community resilience.
Whit holds a law degree from Loyola University of New Orleans, a Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree from the University of New Orleans, and a Bachelor’s degree in geography and political science from Florida State University. He is a member of the Florida Bar, the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), and is Courtesy Faculty for the Patel College of Global Sustainability at the University of South Florida. Whit recently served as President of Walk Bike Tampa, a non-profit organization focused on pedestrian and bike safety.
