The City of Tampa Parks & Recreation Department has partnered with the non-profit Positive Coaching Alliance - Tampa Bay (PCA) to provide staff with industry-leading training opportunities. The two organizations share similar goals of teaching excellence in leadership and instilling a positive culture at work and in sports and recreation to benefit well-being. PCA is renowned for its partnerships with national sports organizations, such as Major League Baseball, Little League® Baseball and Softball, Jr. NBA, AYSO and more.

“Our entire staff in Parks and Recreation is looking forward to furthering our work with PCA, an non-profit organization that was extremely beneficial in helping our staff work through the challenges of this year,” said Sherisha Hills, Interim Director of City of Tampa Parks and Recreation.  “To better equip our staff and coaches in making a positive difference in the lives of kids, we are excited to provide valuable professional development, through avenues such as PCA’s programming, that will allow our team to enjoy their work experience with the City.”

The partnership kicked off this fall with all City of Tampa's Parks and Recreation Department coaches and staff participating in PCA’s Double-Goal Coach® workshops, hosted both safely in person and virtually. Each team member engaged in two workshops where they talked with peers about what it means to teach kids to compete to win, how to take advantage of teaching them life lessons, and what it takes to create a positive culture that keeps kids returning to practices and games.

"The coaching education for the City is of value to not only them, but the entire Tampa Bay area," said Mason Cathey, Executive Director at PCA-Tampa Bay.  “Now that we are working with the City, Hillsborough County's Public Schools and Parks and Recreation, plus the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA, kids will really start to receive consistent messaging as we build a positive culture in our community.  Whether a kid is at school or at a park, coaches will be more prepared to develop kids not only as better athletes, but also people with strong character."

“From adult programs to summer camps to adaptive recreation, our Parks & Recreation team touches so many lives in our community. Professional development opportunities like this allow us to better serve our residents and ultimately further our mission in Transforming Tampa’s Tomorrow,” said Mayor Jane Castor.
