Mayor Jane Castor and the City of Tampa Black History Committee awarded 18 high school students with scholarship money at their Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony on Monday, May 9, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. at the Tampa River Center at Julian B. Lane Park.
Each year, the City of Tampa Black History Committee rewards students for their scholastic achievements. Students are motivated to dream, achieve and grow while utilizing scholarship funds to obtain a degree from the university of their choice.
This year the City of Tampa Black History Committee is awarding a total of $35,500 to deserving Tampa students.
These students are top of their class as Student Body Presidents and Valedictorians. They each plan to attend different colleges and universities across the country to pursue a variety of fields of studies.
The 18 scholarship recipients excel outside the classroom as business owners and dedicated volunteers with organizations across Hillsborough County, serving as camp counselors, youth coaches and mentors who strive to make a difference in the lives of others and the community everyday.
"We are overly excited to assist students further their education beyond high school and help them make a difference in a positive manner,” said Black History Committee former President Celeste Gibbons. "Our students are our future and we know this scholarship money will help jumpstart their futures.”
Mayor Jane Castor will provide greetings to the scholarship recipients, their parents, committee members, corporate scholarship sponsors and other special guests who will attending the ceremony.
Erica Riggins from Spectrum News 9 will serve as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event.
The scholarship categories include:
Category 1: Bobby Bowden Scholarship-one winner $3,000 each
Category 2: Janett S, Martin Scholarship-3 three winners $1,500 each
Category 3: Presidential Scholarship-10 winners $2,500 each
Category 4: College Book Stipend-4 winners $500 each

The organization consist of dedicated men and women who volunteer their time to focus on the continuing education of African American history and provide a legacy of education through annual scholarship awards.
