On February 11, 1958, Motorcycle Officer Carl F. (Pete) Chastain, age 26 years, was seriously injured when his motorcycle was struck at Cass Street and Rome Avenue. The investigation disclosed that Officer Chastain was on his way to a complaint when his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle and was displaced into a second vehicle. The accident occurred on Gasparilla Day.
On February 12, 1958, Officer Carl Chastain died from his injuries. Officer Chastain had been on the Tampa Police Department for less than three years. He had been married for only five months.
During the funeral services, The Reverend Frank Bishop said, "He is a young man who had gone out to maintain law and order. He has give his all - he has given his best."
