Since 1895 there have been 32 Tampa Police Officers killed in the line of duty. These honorable names shall never be forgotten. They are our history. They have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the citizens of Tampa.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. bears the names of more than 22,000 law enforcement officers from across our nation who were killed in the line of duty since the first recorded police officer death in 1786.
On average, one police officer is killed in the line of duty every 54 hours. In 2019, more than 60,000 law enforcement officers were assaulted, resulting in over 18,000 injuries. During 2020 across America, 295 law enforcement officers were lost in the performance of their duties, compared with 139 police officers in 2019.
